That is what I was hoping to do
originally, but apparently there has been some bad luck with that
approach since many browsers from mobile devices contain the entire
user-agent string for IE or Mozilla for instance, but add a piece of
text that would identify them as mobile. So a check like that could
very likely succeed for many of those unless you crossed it with an OS
and profile check anyway.
Sadly, that brings us back to the original problem hehe. Keep in mind
though, I haven't gotten to really test any solution since I don't have
20 mobile devices at my disposal, so much of what I'm spouting is items
I've read hehe.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Mike.

Why not just check for standard browsers and forward them
on to your
mobile site if the check fails? There's probably a lot less to check
for.

Yup, that's essentially the plan hehe.
Have you checked out the WURFL solution I mentioned yet? Wanted to get
your
take on it. Seems like there is already a test-worthy Java API and
custom
tag library for use with it and while we would have to update it
occasionally, it wouldn't be much worse than a scheduled download.

Hi John, your response was really valuable. I felt kind of foolish
for
not
having looked up a mobile specific mailing list :-P I've joined up
and
started the searching previous to actually posting the question.
The wordpress setup is a mix of user-agent, profile, mime-type and
OS
detection.
There is also a PHP class that I found earlier that is actually a
pretty
impressive piece of work as it stores a big library of over 2000
phones
that
includes some of the device capabilities, etc. It does however seem
like a
futile effort as rather than having a big library file, it has an
endlessly
growing bit of detection code.
See: http://phpclasses.goodphp.com/browse/file/7912.html
My fear is the maintainance nightmare either of those would create
as new
devices come out, etc. but that may be what it comes down to hehe. My
hope
is that I might find a database of some sort that is at least
maintained
for
me hehe.
As for the devices I'm trying to detect, I'm going for any mobile
device
that is a non-desktop laptop machine...anything that might have too
small
a
screen for the main site. Phones, PDAs, blackberry devices, etc. I
don't
need to know any of their features because all I'm going to do is
forward
them to the mobile site.
The mobile site will be very simple and straight-forward text and
menu to
minimize bandwidth for mobile users who often have to pay by the
bandwidth
they use and provide something many different devices can use.
Thanks again,
Mike.

Subject: [DFW CFUG] Mobile Device Detection
Hey everyone...I'm researching ways to detect and redirect mobile
devices
to
a mobile site for one of my clients and thought I would see if
anybody on
the list has attacked this problem.
It seems there is not really a clean way to do it, but I can't even
find
one that seems to be the standard let alone reliable hehe.
So, anyone had to do mobile phone detection?
What was your solution and reason you picked it?
Thanks in advance,
Mike.
