Well, that seems to be the trick...apparently there are no standards for what a mobile device's user agent and profile strings will say.

What's worse is even if I could enter most of the user agent strings I know and check for those, I have to detect mobile devices in Japan, UK, etc. which have completely different models etc. so it would be pointless to fight that battle.

So far, this is the most valuable source I have found:
http://www.developershome.com/wap/detection/

I have found quite a few others, but this goes to summarize most of them. Many of the discussions I have seen on forums come down to a mix of user-agent / OS detection, but again, I fear these won't even cover a majority of the devices I would need to forward to the mobile site.

I will keep the list up to date with anything new I find.

Mike.

Mike,

I am curious – I have not tackled this problem but am curious if you tried detecting the browser type and what problems you encountered if you did?

Thanks,

Tom

Subject: [DFW CFUG] Mobile Device Detection

Hey everyone...I'm researching ways to detect and redirect mobile devices to a mobile site for one of my clients and thought I would see if anybody on the list has attacked this problem.

It seems there is not really a clean way to do it, but I can't even find one that seems to be the standard let alone reliable hehe.

So, anyone had to do mobile phone detection?

What was your solution and reason you picked it?

Thanks in advance,
Mike.
