Once you begin deciding what is an 'essential requirement' in a standard and what is
not, then you are no longer following the standard and instead making up whatever
garbage suits you or your broken tools' whims.
A standard is just that and you either conform to it or you do not. If the standard
is unambiguous then conformance is an easy thing to decide:
"A unique name has three pieces, separated by dots. On the left is the
result of time() or the second counter from gettimeofday()."
There is no ambiguity in the Maildir spec, especially in this regard.
