Mike,

Well, I think I can pull off ALL 3 options.

Changing the gearing to 1.375:1 only requires another sprocket. $12 mcmaster.com. Maybe add a chain link.

Changing the clutch voltage would require having a longer wire on the feed to the solid state relay. Then tap the pack at the voltage lower than 48V.

To eliminate the clutch completely, I think I've got a spare jackshaft. Then add a sprocket. If I don't have that ratio (and I've got quite a few saved up), another $12 mcmaster.com. I can get the replacement jackshaft ready, and swapping from the transmission to the direct drive should take less than 15 minutes.

What do you think the aerodynamic effects are at that speed? I guess more important as I hit 50/60 MPH. I could see some improvement to push air around the wide battery pack. That's a bit like a brick wall right now. What effect does a front fender have?

So I'm looking at a few options:

A) Change the gearing so 1st gear is 1.375:1 and 2nd gear is 1:1. This will put a smaller load change on the motors, and should hit just over 70 at 2900 RPM.

B) Lower the voltage way down on the clutch (voltage yet to be determined) so that the clutch actually slips and bring on the added load slowly. Might tear up the clutch though?

C) Toss the transmission and see if I can get it running as quick as I did before the transmission.

Considering your financial situation (which I really don't know anything about but I'm assuming you're like the rest of us) and the time constraints I think I'd go with C. Just get it back the way it was. Maybe do a little more with aerodynamics?
