I would not call the weight penalty of an ADC big. The ADC on my motorcycle
weighs in at around 50 pounds, which is probably 20 - 30 pounds more than
one of the pancake style motors. It is definitely heavier, but that's part
of the reason in can deal with more amps. In motors, amps generate heat,
and a heavier motor generally has more thermal mass to absorb the heat.
It's definitely a trade off. With the permanent magnet motors you run two
risks from pushing big amps through them. You may actually melt something
that ruins the motor, or you might demagnatize the magnets. I just like to
be able to abuse my motor if I so desire without paying a penalty :-)
Either motor will work fine as long as you understand the strengths and
weaknesses and design and ride accordingly. For instance, a long steady
hill can be a quick death sentence for an Etek. If you live in Florida, you
probably don't have to worry about this. I have one hill that I climb that
is 2 miles of steep windy 25 - 40 mph of climbing. My motor handles this no
problem.

>From a book on converting gas to electric vehicles, what they say is that
regen works ideally on vehicles that will be driven above 50 mph a good
deal. I think with most EMCs your driving will be 0-45, a lot of stop and
go. On EMCs regen might cause the rear tire to lose fraction, and cause an
unstable riding condition. Frankly not worth my life to experiment with a
regen controller.
The PMG seems to have the most HP for the weight. The Etec (I have heard)
has issues with reliability. The ADC series are really awesome but you pay
a weight penalty, and on a bike that is critical. Something to consider,
yeah you can buy cheap 74ah or higher batteries but then the physical
attributes limit how many you can carry, and how they fit. On my bike I
measured and designed the battery trays to fit between the rails, I did
preliminary design in canvas (a design program), turning the batteries this
way and that. Using AGMs, I was allowed to place them on their side which
provides more flexibility in the design. So far I have found no negative
results of being on their side. I found my batteries at Battery Solutions
in Lubbock, TX. Mine are Universal 12550, deep cycle 55ah, ran $63 a pop
plus shipping for 6 or more batteries. They have a pretty good selection,
easy website to find options.
