We currently have the portal hosted on the internet over SSL. It hasn’t been a joyful experience but we got it working enough in the end. The problem is when you try to access the portal info from within Team Explorer – we ended up allowing both internal traffic to connect via https and local traffic to connect via http using some rules in our firewall.

The reporting server adds a layer of complexity to this as out of the box they are local addresses in the web parts on the portal.

Our developers working remotely still need to open a VPN connection to work with the TFS web services.

In the end our customer was very happy to be able to use the portal as part of the ongoing project collaboration and communication.

You can – but it doesn't work perfectly. You always get challenged for credentials, and if you try and put it behind an SSL tunnel you are just asking for trouble. We've got two separate configurations where we have that going.

Hey guys,

I've been wondering if it would be possible to get hosted TFS? I know it integrates heavily with AD but I do remember (from the beta 1 installation that we tried out) that it's possible to have users connect remotely to it without being on the domain.

So, does anybody know of a host that'd be willing to do that? (other than getting a dedicated server of course).

Am seriously keen in trying it out, but since it's still in beta I wont drag it into the development team at work (can't risk it).
