Hi Jan, If you have a class of urban struggling students, the Bluford series initially hooks my kids into reading. These are NOT well-written books, but have high drama and are very accessible to kids. This listserv suggested this series 2 years ago and I have been very thankful. Also, they are only $1 a piece. I often don't get them back, but it only costs me $10 to replace the whole series.
Other book title suggestions from my kids that haven't been mentioned already and were independently read: 1. Twisted Summer 2. Green Angel 3. Monster 4. I am the Cheese 5. Rag and Bone Shop 6. No More Dead Dogs 7. The Skin I'm In 8. The House on Mango Street 9. Bone 10. Heat 11. Crispin 12. The Clique series Patricia Sankey Reading Specialist Templeton Middle School >>> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 07/19/07 10:12 PM >>> In the fall I am going to be teaching a middle school (grades 6 to 8) reading class. This is a new class in my building for struggling readers. I'm guessing that many of these students do not know if they have a favor author or a favorite genre. Can you suggest some books that your middle school students (especially struggling readers) have enjoyed? Thanks!
