I have all lines running aft from the mast over top of my pilothouse,   
main halyard, jiffy reef halyard and a main downline that runs from  
the maintop downwards.   It definitely helps to bring down the main  
fully and quickly singlehanded from the cockpit.  I kinda look at it a  
insurance in case of a ripped mainsail or jammed slugs.
