There are no internal circuit boards in the KISS.

There are no internal brushes in the KISS. The machine consists of magnets
rotating inside stator coils generating three-phase wild ac.

I am told that the generator bearings give very little trouble.

The azimuth bearings are crap. Ill fitting and of poor design they allow the
unit to rattle around on the mast. I changed them to a pair of boat trailer
roller bearings and a seal at great expense for the machine shop work to make
the required parts. If the unit's design would be changed slightly the expense
would be slight. The two bearings and a seal are less than $15, but the
machine shop work was $300 per unit. If I had know that it would be that much,
I would have changed the design.

The standard unit has a string on the tail that allows the unit no more than
three turns until the owner must unwrap the unit again.

The (optional) slip rings are mercury-wetted conveyer drive three-phase units
are of high quality (and expense) that the installer wires into the feed lines
hanging down in the mast after they exit the generator. This eliminates the
string routine.

The three-phase ac is rectified in an external control box that has a switch to
short the output of the generator to stop it from spinning in low and moderate
wind speeds. This switch in ineffective in high winds so I use another
technique to stop the spinners then.

Assuming the internal circuit board if any, remain working, what wears out
except brushes and bearings?

Bearings and brushes are the same no matter the design. Brush size is a
function of brush holder size determined by the amount of current.
I have on occasion had to flat file one side of new brushes that did not fit
exactly into very old brush holders.
Any good motor shop should be able to cross reference bearings from their
master catalog.
Shaft OD and press fit hole ID and bearing width are pretty standard.
Anybody who can use a caliper or micrometer should be able to figure that one
out.

KISS wind generators produced three phase wild ac that is rectified in an
external box.

Anybody ever try this? Thanks, Ken Pearce
Ken, there is one brand which definitely uses automotive pieces right from an
AC Delco catalog.
Other than that most of the brands are really alternators, that rectify the AC
to DC internally, so your friends advise was quite appropriate.
