Caleb, verrrr-e-y interesting. Got me to thinking about our experiences "down south". I'm from here (Louisiana). At the moment we're living near my home town at the Port of Iberia, LA. The other live aboards and weekenders are all like us - laid back and do-your-thing-I'll-do-mine types. Well, with maybe a couple weekender exceptions.
Did spend some time in New Orleans and North Shore and I do have to agree with you. But then that area and the others you mention are "big city" or at least have a big city mentality. We haven't spent much time at marinas overall, but did stay a while at a couple in Pensacola, FL. Pensacola is fairly big, but has that small town outlook and feel. All in all pleasant if one stays away from the "yachtie" marinas. Fellow Louisianians Charles and Pat Culotta said it all, "You will not believe how reasonable priced things are West of the Mississippi." I'll just add how friendly and easygoing the folks are.
