Lew, I have the same setup (XP Pro?) on a Dell laptop without problem. I just installed SP3 without problem. Have you been patching XP regularly with MS updates?
Telling you that mine is working doesn't help you much, save for suggesting it shouldn't be happening. When you uninstalled, did you check your Registry to make sure that all traces were gone? I'd run MS update before I did anything else. If you have an HP PC, first check to see that the SP3 problem has been fixed.
