My very dated experience is that the electric ram caused significant drag. When 
I was told that there was no cure, I had to increase the diameter of the wheel 
to gain sufficient mechanical advantage. I can relate to budget considerations!

At that time, I was told the only way to eliminate drag was to use an hydraulic 
ram and all that entails. One good thing is that you use a separate tiller arm 
for the ram. This gives you backup steering should the cables jam or part.
