The replacement genny will be an Entec 4.2kw unit. The choice is driven
by the fact that generating unit is water cooled so the sound shield
does not require cooling venting and the sound shield seems particularly
well engineered. Oh, and it fits in the space available.

The boat is a Tayana 52 center cockpit cutter. While the boat is
largish, she has a comparatively small engine space comprised basically
of the space under the cockpit sole. Into this space is crammed the
propulsion engine, the generator, the refrigeration compressor, and a
watermaker. I'm disposing of the watermaker and putting in a smaller
genny to get more space. I'll also try to improve the spaces sound
proofing which is pretty minimal.

Noise is the primary reason for the change. The old Westerbeast had no
sound shielding at all and was unpleasantly loud. You had to be REALLY
tired to be able to sleep in the aft cabin when the thing was running.
Rum helped. Don't know if it was objectionable to other people. I
probably couldn't hear them if they did complain.

The only thing I have to have a genny to do is run AC when anchored so
quiet is nice. The Entec genny's output is also sufficient to create the
maximum output from my inverter\charger (140A @ 12V) so it will charge
batteries well. What's more, if you screw up and really flatten the
batteries, the Entec can be started by hand.
