My daughter did the same for my 95 year old mother - she had been
using AOL for a number of years and was used to it. She got a Verizon
DSL modem and so my daughter set it up for her to use AOL with the
Verizon modem. My daughter also disabled the wireless because my mom
was using a desktop which didn't have wireless capability.

When my mom died, I took her modem and enabled it on my account, but I
did not change ISPs. I don't know about other ISPs, but Verizon would
take me through the procedure to set the modem up.
