Hard wiring the alternator to the battery bank eliminates the 
possibility of blowing the alternator diode bridge.

You can simplify your life a great deal as well as reducing costs by 
totally isolating the starting battery from everything but the cranking 
motor circuit.

Install a small (10W or less) solar panel and dedicate it to recharging 
the starting battery.

Carry a set of automotive jumper cables for emergency use in case the 
starting battery ever fails.
