Lew - I seem to recall that Hunter isolates the starter battery, using a small
solar panel to charge it as you suggest, but something I'm not understanding
here. The starter battery is isolated, but a 10W charger will take quite a
while to recharge the battery after starting, since that's a large draw, it
sounds inefficient if not ineffective - or does the battery still have the
alternator charging it?

Maybe, but she now seems much more responsive to the current than wind and
I see very few sailboats set their mizzens at anchor. Time will tell...

Which becomes totally unnecessary if you isolate the battery.
Becomes a case of less is more.

The starting battery has to get charged from somewhere. If it is isolated,
it has to have a combiner to the house bank or from the house bank if the
alternator is used as a source to both banks.

Read my lips:
(From a previous post)
A small solar panel (10W or less), dedicated to the starting battery,
solves the problem.
