Lee and List, I believe the best philosophy is to view all hostages as dead and act to clear the seas of the scourge that is a growing threat.
Last fall some Brits paid a million pounds to free a few British subjects who had been held more than a year. It only encouraged the folks who are pirates and thugs. My solution: We need to have the US Navy outfit about 12 yachts and cruiser appearing boats, like Q ships (wolves in sheep clothing - decoy vessels) that would attract the pirates any way they could. Have a well armed and prepared bunch of marines on each one and cruise back and forth in the Arabian Sea for a year with close contact support to naval assets in the area. The problem would be diminishing instead of increasing. There is support for marines doing such an operation if you listen to the words in the Marine Corps hymn "from the shores of Tripoli". As was the attitude back in our countries infancy, Millions for Defense, not one cent for tribute! The US Navy more than a year ago killed 3 pirates on the high seas when they were overheard threatening their American hostages that they had in a life boat. Just a few days ago, a court in NY sentenced one pirate to 30+ years in prison. My thinking is that as soon as the pirates thought they were going to be assaulted, they shot the hostages in cold blood. The US Navy killed 2 of them and have 13 captured. My guess is that these 13 will soon be standing before a US court in NY. Trust me, the next Americans that get caught will be treated quite poorly. These pirates have a very long term memory and have been quite conscious NOT to harm their hostages until know. Americans are in their sights, and should act accordingly. Dumb question: Why don’t they escort ships and yachts in convoy instead of “patrolling the waters?” Wouldn’t that be more cost efficient and safer?
