Inkjets:

The head clogs due lack of use could be handled by a automatic weekly print
job. I've used cron on Linux and OSX to do this.
Another good idea is to buy head cleaner and soak the printer's cleaning pad
(if it has one) with it. That way the heads are always moist.

Ink cost/usage can be solved by choosing a printer that can utilize a bulk
continuous ink system.
A small multifunction inkjet with a continuous Ink system would probably be
the lowest cost in both print supplies and power usage.
While this works great on land (i have done it with my Epson RX620), I suspect
that using one on a boat would be a problem.
Anyone tried a CISS (ink system) on a boat underway ?

Kodak printers… i heard that they are the best for ink costs but can't seem to
find brick and mortar retailers.

Lasers:
Lower Cost per page (compared to average inkjets) and no ink related hassles,
but more power usage.

The HP 1018 that John mentions has specs of:
Power Consumption operational 220 Watt
Power Consumption Stand by / Sleep 2 Watt
Not bad at all, that half of the operational consumption of most I have looked
at. (The new Brother HL3040 uses 70 watts in standby alone !)
The 1018 is discontinued unfortunately.

I've been looking at the Samsung ML 1665 Monochome laser. it uses 270 watts
when operating and is small, @ 7" x 9" x 13".

But.. scanner+printing would be nice, since I scan important paper receipts and
the occasional photo.
I could use a separate scanner I guess... stick it in a locker in one of those
large ziplock bags and pull it out when needed.
Most multifunction laser printers seem to be power gluttons from the specs, but
that spec probably is when scanning and printing.
I'm curious what the real world "print only" power consumption would be for
whichever multi-function laser is the smallest.

P.S. Try order parts when a company has an old part on a shelf but not on
their computer…… computers suck.. pencil & paper just works. ;)
