All the messages are coming thru LOUD AND CLEAR on Angel Louise, now floating peacefully in the most beautiful port we have been in during the last 12 years we have been boating, and the last 7 as live aboards, and the last 5 as cruisers! We are in SIMI, aka Symi, here in the SE part of the Greek islands on the Aegean Sea. We are signing up for winter mooring aboard at NETSEL or NETZEL marina in Marmaris, Turkey.
Europe (or at least the 25 mainstays of the EU - with exception of England, Channel Islands - and Norway, I believe) has the SCHENGEN treaty where the countries try to emulate the USA states allowing free movement from state to state among Schengen Countries with citizens of them allowed to work anywhere and freely travel anywhere without customs problems. But they have a common response to outsiders, like us US citizens. Only 90 days presence allowed in any 6 months or 180 day time stretch. Since we lowered mast and boated through the Rhine, Main, and Danube all year we only have about 18 days left in Europe before we would be OVERSTAYING. So we will go to Turkey where you can get a Temporary Resident visa for longer than 90 days. Next spring Sue and I plan to go on a rally called the Eastern Mediterranean Yacht Rally (www.EMYR.org) and then will turn tail and head West, hoping to complete a tour of the Med (again only 90 days in the countries of Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal) and then go down to the Canary Islands and wait till Christmas and then try to copy Columbus' voyage back to the new world. Angel Louise was built as a Catamaran 25 years ago but we sail her like a barge! If the wind is not pushing us ... helping the engines along... we do not go. Too heavy from being Live Aboards for so long. Time to move from Simi, its close to sun up here at 6:45 Friday.
