I think this could be solved by finalizing the theming support, so that every part of the interface is themeable, then choosing some nice looking themes and including them officially in the release. (Not to plug my own work, but I made a theme recently that got quite popular...) I'm sure there'd be a lot more good looking themes if the theming support was more complete. Although the default theme does look a bit dated, on the other hand it does give LMMS a certain charm, a sort of nostalgic feel - and for that matter, many professional audio softwares aren't even much better graphically.
