I think some names have more positive points than others.
"Fruity Loops" to me always was a way of saying "you can make music with
loops and we have a sens of humor" to the users.
Picking a name a marketing and public-relation related decision. - FL has a
strawberry as it's logo and that is present all around the program - the
name defines it's character.
If we were to call our program "Icy Tracks" - we'd need to go with a
frozen-water look to make this name sensible and memorable for it's users.
"Music Studio" I think is not the best choice, because it's not a unique
name. It's already a name of a whole class of programs. That's why "Gedit"
is better than "Editor" - searching for "Gedit" or "LMMS" gives you
immediately what you want, while searching for "Editor" or "Music Studio"
would give you too many results not connected to what you're searching for.
LMMS is a good name in this point, because it's unique, short and easy to
remember. However it's not perfectly easy on pronounciation, and the full
name has two misleading pieces of information out of total three:
Linux [ - ]
Multimedia [ - ]
Studio [ + ]
That's why there were trials to change the full name, while leaving the
abbreviation intact.
I think we can create a table with all names suggested - I could analyse
and count features of each name for good [ + ] and bad [ - ]. The names
with most points would then be selected for "final tournament".
Making a global voting could be a good idea - all in all it's the people
who have to like this name and think it's a good choice.
Alternatively we could leave this to the most noble among us, or the most
experienced with marketing.
