Hi there, it’s Peter here with your Letter. Yesterday and this morning looked
fairly dank didn’t it? I don’t want to jinx it, but the sun’s coming out just
in time for lunchtime! Let’s hope it lasts!

There’s lots of the news at the moment about the protests by lorry drivers at
the price of fuel. Today, as Gordon Brown asks petrol producers to bring down
the price of fuel, we'll find out what impact the price at the pumps is having
on our rural communities. The price of diesel and petrol keeps going up. So
tune in tonight for more on this story.

Also tonight, we'll look at the hugely ambitious ideas to transform Boston's
waterfront as the council look at plans today. It's hoped it will make the
Lincolnshire town into a centre for tourism and leisure. We’ll take a look at
what’s planned for the town.

We'll be finding out why Hull has been revealed as the stomach stapling capital
of the country. Apparently more obesity operations were carried out in the city
last year than anywhere else in the country.

Look North have taken a trip to Wigan to find out what boost Hull can expect in
tourism after Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League. And as the Lincoln
City boss, Peter Jackson, returns to work today whilst still being in the
middle of treatment for cancer, we'll have a chat with him to see how he's
doing. That’s all tonight on BBC One at half past six. I hope you can join me.

Hoopoo

Last night I had a wonderful chat with Bill Oddie. It’s always a pleasure
chatting with him. He’s so enthusiastic about wildlife and his knowledge about
birds is incredible! And didn’t that house look lovely in Fakenham. I believe
that’s where they film Springwatch. After the interview, our sound engineer
said there were lots of buzzing insects and bird calls he could hear down the
microphone! So, I was asking Bill about the rare Hoopoo bird that was spotted
by Mike Gough from Fillinghome. Apparently, only around a hundred or so make it
all the way to England each year from Africa and Madagascar. I’ve certainly
never seen one before. I mentioned it would be great if you could get in touch
if you’ve seen these before or even if you’ve got photos of these special birds
as well. Well, I’ve seen a number of emails this morning come in. So thanks for
those. Here’s an email from Sandie, who now lives in Norfolk, but used to hail
from Friskney. She said she had seen some Hoopoos in!
her back garden in Lincolnshire about three years ago. She writes, “we
enjoyed them for about a week in the garden. We thought they were parrots
escaped from someone’s aviary!” And that’s not all! John Tomkins has emailed in
with some photos as well! John tells me that his grandson took some photos of
the bird in their back garden on the 19th May near Caistor. So thanks to Sandie
and John for letting me know about your bird spotting! That’s very much in the
spirit of Springwatch isn’t it!

Prescott

He was the deputy prime minister and of course the MP for Hull East. It now
looks like John Prescott is looking at a different career as an actor! He’s
making his acting debut on Radio Four in a radio play, playing a policeman!
That’s coming up on Radio Four at the beginning of June.

Well, that's it from me for now. I’m sure you know I’m a big fan of watching
TV! I missed the Apprentice last night, because I was presenting the late
bulletin of course. So don’t tell me what happened! I’m hoping to catch up with
it on the Iplayer at some point. Something else that I’ll miss, but I hope to
watch later is the Mary Whitehouse story called ‘Filth’. It’s got the wonderful
Julie Walters in it. I’ve seen the adverts for it and it looks great, so
looking forward to that tonight.

Take care today,

Peter
