Hi there, and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. On tonight’s programme, we'll
be following Humberside Police on their latest crackdown on drug related crime.

Also tonight, we'll meet the eleven year old girl from Spalding, who weighs
only six stone, but was told by the new Wii Fit game that she needs to lose
weight. We’ll be speaking to her concerned mother today.

And we’ll be with the residents of Spilsby in Lincolnshire, who are still out
of their homes following last year's flooding.

We’re taking a look back at a story that we covered last week. We'll be with
the parents in Barrow protesting against the decision to withdraw free school
travel for their children. We’ll follow the parents of ninety-nine pupils, who
will be walking along the route deemed a ‘safe route to school’ along the A1077
from Barrow to Barton upon Humber.

Also on the programme, as thieves target Lincolnshire's roads in a bid to cash
in on the rising cost of scrap metal prices, we'll investigate what impact this
could have on road safety.

Plus we'll get the latest on Hull City's preparations for their big Wembley
match. And speaking of which, on Friday's Look North, I'll be presenting live
from 6.30pm for a whole hour live from Wembley Stadium. As well as a round up
of all the day's other news, and the all-important weather forecast of course,
I'll be talking to guests live at the stadium and building up to the game with
special reports on Hull City, their history, their fans, and the opposition. So
there’s a note for your diaries. On Friday join me from half past six on BBC
One for a special extended Look North on Hull City’s biggest game ever.

Sick With Worry

Pensionable age is fast approaching for us all – although for some, it’s nearer
than others! No comments please. But this is a concern I’m sure and I wonder
how many Levy Letter readers can see some connection with their own position in
terms of this story. A survey has suggested that one in four older people are
so worried about their future that they are making themselves ill. A fifth of
over-65s felt their quality of life had worsened in the last year and one in
ten said they were often lonely. And the worrying statistics continue – 21% of
pensioners are surviving below the poverty line and 15% live in what they call
persistent poverty. If you can remember, Look North looked at the problem in
the rising cost of fuel and how many pensioners in our region are struggling to
heat their homes. According to this survey, nearly a quarter of pensioners
avoid heating their bedroom, bathroom or living room due to financial worries.
So there you go, more and more pensioners are conc!
 erned about their future.

Rotting Teeth

I think we all think that if we eat healthily then our teeth will stay nice and
healthy well into our old age. Ah, but not so apparently! Here we all are,
supping on our fruit smoothies and natural fruit juices because we think
they’re good for us. But dentists are now warning us that the current
popularity of these sorts of fruit drinks could lead to widespread tooth
damage. Dentists say that the beneficial effects of boosting our consumption of
fruit are likely to be far outweighed by the damage the drinks can cause to our
teeth. And it’s all down to the high levels of sugar and acid in the fruit.
Here’s the warning though. They say that every time we sip on a fruit smoothie,
if we happen to have one on our desk at work, then our teeth are attacked by
the acid for up to an hour. The protective enamel on our teeth can erode,
causing pain and sensitivity, possibly leading eventually to decay. So here’s
the advice from the dentists – brush your teeth before drinking fruit jui!
ce as this helps protect against the damaging effect of the acid in the juice.
I’m not sure it’ll make the juice taste nice though! And they warn against
brushing immediately afterwards as the tooth enamel can be weakened by the acid
content. So I was surprised at that one! As always if you want to comment on
anything in the Letter or in the programme, then get in touch. I’d love to hear
from you. It’s the usual email address of [EMAIL PROTECTED] I look forward to
hearing from you.

Take care,

Peter
