Hello and welcome to Fridays Levy Letter. I hope youve had a very good week, and join me for Look North tonight at the usual time of half past six on BBC One. Well have all the days news and stories from our part of the world, and that all important weather forecast for the coming days as well. Lets hope it brightens up and we get some proper July sun.
Last Choir Standing You might have heard coverage beginning today on Radio Humberside about the Last Choir Standing competition. Its BBC Ones new Saturday night search to find the nations favourite choir, and people in Hull are being invited to join a free giant city centre sing along next month. The event will involve a mass singing workshop for the audience along with performances from local choirs. And Ill be there to host the event, but Im not promising any singing. I have to save my voice for the television. Thats my excuse anyway! The singing workshop will take place at The Big Screen, Queen Victoria Square, Hull on Saturday, August 9 at 3pm. There will also be performances given by the local choirs, and the whole event is expected to last about 90 minutes. Five hundred tickets for seats at the event are available from today until midnight on Sunday, July 27. To be in the seated audience, members of the public will need to register for tickets either on the website bbc.co.uk/lastchoirstanding or by telephone on 03700 100 150 (calls cost no more than calls to 01/02 geographic numbers). If you want to know any more about what is sure to be a great event, then you can email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Im looking forward to it already, and I hope Ill see lots of you there. Airports Well I had a story in the Letter yesterday about Heathrows new Terminal 5, and some of the problems theyve had. Well thankfully airports in our part of the world seem to fare better, I had this email from Brian, who says: Reading about Heathrow's problems makes me wish to pass a bouquet on to Robin Hood airport. Travelling with a wheelchair bound person on a holiday flight just recently I have only admiration and regard for the way things were handled. The cheerfulness and assistance given to us was second to none. Thats good to know. Maybe its the old thing about northerners being friendlier than southerners? I dont think Im going to open up that old debate again! But thank you Brian for your message. Beatles Auction Auctions of Fab Four memorabilia always seem to be successful, and reading about the latest event in the news, it looks as if enthusiasm for Beatles relics is only getting stronger, and more expensive! The iconic drum skin used on the cover of The Beatles Sgt Pepper album was sold for almost four times the estimated price at a staggering £541,250, or $1.07 million. It has to be one of the single most recognisable drums in history, although I wonder if youd ever want to play it after spending all that money. Hand written lyrics to the John Lennon song Give Peace a Chance also sold for £421,250. Thats quite amazing for what is essentially a piece of paper, and a pair of Johns prescription tinted glasses went for £39,650. So over thirty years after The Beatles split up, pieces of memorabilia are selling for record prices. Classics in the Park Tomorrow night is the Classics in the Park concert at Brantingham Park in Elloughton. There should be around 3,000 people attending, and it starts at 7.30pm with the gates opening around 4 in the afternoon. Our own Blair Jacobs is hosting the event, and profits are going to the Daisy Appeal, and South Hunsley School. If youre going, I hope you have a wonderful time. If you want to let me know about anything for the programme, or anything interesting for the Levy Letter, get in touch and write to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Im always on the look out for unusual pictures we can show before the weather, and of course if you have stories we should hear, send them in. Thats it from me for today, I hope you have a very good afternoon, and a good weekend. Ill be on BBC One tonight at half past six for Fridays Look North, I hope you can join me then.
