Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter for Wednesday. It’s the kind of
weather where you have to go out with a pair of sunglasses and an umbrella just
in case, isn’t it? I hope you can join me tonight at the usual time for Look
North, at half past six on BBC One. We’ll have all the day’s news and stories
from our part of the world, and also the all important weather forecast too.

I mentioned in yesterday’s letter that there were some unusual, and quite
accomplished lego sculptures in a garden on Anlaby Common. Well thank you to
Sue who sent me a couple of pictures, just in case I couldn’t quite believe
what I’d been told! I can confirm that Postman Pat, Bob the Builder, and Thomas
the Tank Engine are indeed looking very good, and if you see them, you’ll know
what I mean. I don’t know how long they took to make, but there’s some
excellent craftsmanship, and they’re well worth a look.

Last Choir Standing

If you’ve been reading the letter lately you’ll know all about the Last Choir
Standing event in Hull on Saturday 9th of August. There’ll be a giant sing
along next month in the city centre and some choral performances to enjoy. I’ll
be there at Queen Victoria Square underneath the Big Screen on Saturday 9th
August at 3pm. If you want to be part of the seated audience, then you need to
register for the tickets on the website – bbc.co.uk/lastchoirstanding or by
telephone on 03700 100 150. I hope you’ll come down and enjoy the event.

Flying

I’ve mentioned Heathrow’s Terminal 5 recently in the letter, and it seems the
aviation industry is facing a bit of a difficult time due to increased fuel
prices and lower passenger numbers. Incredibly, one major airline is apparently
willing to fly virtually empty planes back and forth rather than cancel
flights. They’d rather fly with just a handful of passengers than withdraw from
take off and landing slots worth millions of pounds at major airports.
Unless airlines fly a certain amount of their scheduled flights, they can lose
the right to fly at the best times. And of course flights at convenient times
are more likely to attract customers.
Apparently, it costs around £60,000 to operate a flight between Heathrow to
Edinburgh, and a prime time slot at Heathrow is worth about £30 million. There
are such huge amounts of money being spent on flying planes, and if people
continue to fly less, and fuel prices continue to rise then flights may reduce
as well. According to analysts, there will already be 10% less seats available
on planes this winter as companies react to challenging conditions.
Of course from an environmental point of view, less flights is good news, but
for frequent flyers or holiday makers, fewer seats and cancelled flights aren’t
what you want to hear.

Hull City

There’s been a lot of work and money invested in Hull and the surrounding area
in recent years to try and improve the city’s reputation and it’s obviously
working because the local football club, you might have heard about them, have
managed to attract three wealthy footballers in the same day.
These are players who presumably could have chosen to ply their trade in other
places, so for them to choose to join Hull is quite a boost for the club. No
matter how you think The Tigers are going to do in the new season, it’s been
quite a story. I think I can say that people from all around will be hoping
them success in the coming year, even if you’re not much of a sports fan.

Don’t forget if you miss a Look North programme for some reason then now you
can catch up with the latest news and stories on our website at
www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. You can watch some of our top stories
individually, and also see the full bulletin online. So now there’s no excuse
for missing out, even if you’re on your holidays! All you need is an internet
connection.

Well that’s about it from me for today’s letter. If there’s anything you think
we should know about, get in touch, drop us a line at [EMAIL PROTECTED] We read
every message we receive, and you can also get us on our hotline and text
numbers too. I’m always on the look out for interesting and unusual pictures to
show before the weather as well, so send them in either electronically or by
sending a hard copy in the post to the newsroom in Hull and you could see your
masterpiece on the telly.

Have a very good day, bye for now

Peter
