Hi Bryan,

I can tell you with _great_ experience that people who know Samba _know_
the NTLM/Kerberos authentication, SMB network filesystem, and
NetBIOS/WINS/DNS naming protocols _far_better_ than their MCSE (let
alone MCSA) equivalents.
I can tell you Samba docs earned me my MCSE certification back in 1995. :-)

The MCSA/MCSE exams -- including even 2003 -- are very _non_-technical
when it comes to how SMB, NTLM/Kerberos and NetBIOS/WINS/DNS actually
work, issues, debugging, etc...
And the training courses is also very bad in this respect. I'm used to provide consulting for other MCSEs who cannot make those things work as expected, or that have big problems with broadcast storms and the like because they don't use WINS properly.
