The printer and servers are inexpensive compared to the cost of system administrators or compared to all the employees using them. The cost of 15 Xerox 4400DT printers is about 1/3 of the yearly cost of one system administrator (salary, equipment, vacation, work place, office). And then the printers have a write-off period of 3 years as well. These printers are then able to serve 300 employees (150 Ph.D. students) and 1000 full time undergrad students for three years. If the printing system works and is available for real and necessary prints that is. As an educational institution, it is rather the time of employees and students, that the system administrators are there to serve, that is expensive. The educational department produces Ph.D.'s and passed courses for undergrad students, which means that printer resources must work well and be available for all of them, all the time. The first step of building stable, fast and reliable systems is of course of basing them on open source software... and picking good reliable hardware, like from Xerox... :-) Isn't this getting incredible off-topic now? :-) Henrik ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- YOU MUST BE A LIST MEMBER IN ORDER TO POST TO THE LPRNG MAILING LIST The address you post from MUST be your subscription address If you need help, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or lprng-requests or lprng-digest-requests) with the word 'help' in the body.
