Hi Sam,

i can confirm Chad's good experiences with the switch-printer mechanism.
Unfortunately, RH ES3 doesn't ship any more with redhat-switch-printer :_S. So this is no out-of-the-box choice any more. We also (have to)
switch from RH9 to RH-ES3, and I miss LPRng, too..

redhat-switch-printer is not that misterious, as Patrick discussed here in the list some weeks ago. So we should try to rebuild the redhat-switch-printer-RH9 source.rpm and port it to ES3.

What is even worse, is that redhat-printer-config lost it's capability
to write /etc/printcaps in conjunction with LPRng. :-S
re-pr-co was quite useful to configure all the printfilter options
in a fast way (and independent of the use of cups or Lprng) with
a great mechanism of portability with xml-configuration files.

And at least, i would appreciate the RedHat people to include LPRng again... I don't understand why the Fedora project, which is considered
the "free" developing platfom, is not interested in supporting _different_ systems. It's the same as they would include just one MTA, web-browser, shell, etc. Nobody would consider having the (no-)choice of just one window manager system.

Anyway, it can be done manually of course, and Lprng can be installed
parallel to CUPS somehow. But in my opionion, it cannot be the sense of a distribution to "force" the people to one special flavour of service daemon. (As we have seen whith Chad's experience, it's quite tricky to get rid of CUPS..)

Finally i am very grateful that Patrick offers a wide variety of
ready-made packages (tar.gz, rpm, srpm, deb,...) (and a fine Makefile, too :-) )!

best regards,
 Rainer

Chad, I once tried to switch a RedHat server from CUPS to LPRng. I couldn't
figure out what was wrong when I first did it. I had switched everything but
it still wanted to print CUPS. I finally realized I had to run the RedHat
configuration tool to change print services. RedHat has a specific program
(I can't recall the name of it right off) that has to be run to switch from
CUPS to LPRng. I wouldn't even bother removing CUPS. You can leave all the
programs there and they will not cause any problems and you shouldn't run
into the dependency hell you are in. Hope this helps.
