The best solution may be to install and test them both to see how they work for you. On my home Mandrake 9.0 system, I can tell a difference between KDE and Gnome. Gnome is slightly faster, but only slightly. However, ICEWM is much faster. I have been playing with Mandrake 9.1 rc1 on a single user system. KDE 3.1 is supposed to be faster than 3.0 and so far is appears that it may be the case.
Of course, performance is only one issue.... beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
