Well I can tell you from personal experience that you most positively want GNOME !! Although I prefer working with KDE since it is more "feature" rich that is also the problem with LTSP.
Save yourself many grey hairs and anti-depressants & stay with Gnome. BTW the main problem is DCOPServer (You'll want to forget it ASAP !!! ) ;-)
I'm currently running 3 LTSP labs, each with about 20 clients and I've switched them all to gnome.
