I would expect Gigabit isn't your issue, but cheap switches can be
*really* nasty, particularly when the device is completely dependent on
the network.

Over on the Samba mailing lists, we find the many of our user's 'samba
bugs', often with issues as serious as data corruption are due to
cheap/bad network equipment (cards, cables, switches).  If something
breaks mid-stream, bad things will happen!
