Anders,
1) The concept is for the client to do an SMB share named "drives" so that you have access to everything under it - i.e. "\\ws001\drives\floppy" or "\\ws001\drives\cdrom." I'm not sure why the floppies don't automount the first time.
My work around has been to export the actual directory of the device instead of its parent directory. This is done by editing the rc.localdev script in the etc/ directory of the LTSP tree.
There is a section of the script that starts with [drives] and list the path to be exported. I just add the complete floppy path ("i.e. /tmp/drives/floppy") as the path and this fixes the problem.
Since I only ever have floppy drives as a share, this works fine for me but it may not work well for you if you need flexibility in the devices you are exporting. Also you have to remember to mount the proper share name on the server - i.e. it is now just \\ws001\drives *not* \\ws001\drives\floppy.

2) NFS wasn't used because it is *real* ugly to get it to work well for removable media. Trust me, I have used it for several years. The new SMB method is a *MUCH* better solution, even with the slight bug.

Anybody know how to fix this such that it isn't necessary to do a local
listing of the disc content in order to be able to access it from the
server?

I have a similar problem too .. as I posted time ago, but nobody seems to know about it ;-(

So nobody knows how to fix this?

My guess would be that it must be something to do with either supermount
or samba, or the combination of those two.
Without knowing much about LTSP development, dare I ask why Samba was
chosen instead of NFS?
(I'm sure there must be good reasons, I just can't quite think of them)
