I advice you to use XFCE with Rox file manager, it is much less resources hungry than KDE, and once configured correctly, it will be much easier for you to maintain and for students to use.
I tried it (2 years ago) I think mantaining it is kinda cool, but user experience is less effective. It's harder to jump from Windows to XFCE. And sometimes I've seen teachers who think it's too hard and let it go. thanks for the advice
