I use:
=> fluxbox as WM
=> idesk for desktop icons
=> rox as file manager
It is very a very light setup, all easily configurable text files, and
easy to understand even for Windows adicts.
There is a good install and configure doc on the gentoo website:

In the past we have also used IceWM for a WM, with good results.

I tried it (2 years ago) I think mantaining it is kinda cool, but user
experience is less effective. It's harder to jump from Windows to
