I am sorry, I don't know much 'bout kernels - I can configure or compile
them, but I can't fix bugs or something. To be honest, I'm not even able
to package them for Launchpad. Very sad, because I would like to package
a custom kernel :-/ but there is a large lack of documentation.

We could talk to the Xubuntu people, their solution could be just fine
for Lubuntu. Look at

Has someone links to according bug reports? Is it Lubuntu's "fault" are
the bugs from upstream?

This bug should be pretty easy to fix. Is it still there in Trusty? I
could take a look into this next week. Leads to another question: is
scrot good enough? Do we need an alternative?

We haven't heard of Julien a long time, have we? Well, I hope he is
fine. We should care about him and try to help him doing his work.
