Mail.app has imap support

Well, there are certain accounts I didn't have IMAP access to (like gmail) and some I still don't have access to over IMAP. Of course I could set up local IMAP servers on both machines, dump the mail there and then sync that local store, but I'm still too lazy for that.

And OS X comes with postfix for local smtp.

That's not the problem. In certain cases, I may need the responses I've written to particular emails. Currently, the only way to do that for those POP3 only mailboxes is to BCC myself.
