yes, and there is an X11 darwin port on which Kmail can run - i

why one must install a full SuSE virtual machine to run kmail..

of course you have 4GB of RAM to play with). :-)
Well, you don't need all 4GB of RAM to do that. And, you probably
haven't actually tried compiling and using KDE applications on Mac.
In short, they're not reliable. You have to do things like start X11
rootless, start KDE but disable all desktop icons (and I don't
remember what else) otherwise Kmail and friends will crash. And this
is after spending 8+ hours compiling KDE.
Given that I'm on PPC using VMware and friends isn't an option I have
(or would consider) [*]- but I can totally understand Mark's decision
to spend the 30min it takes to get SuSE setup under VMware rather
than the 10+ hours to compile, and tweak KDE apps to work properly -
well much less if you use the binaries off Fink but still ...
With the roadmap of KDE4 aiming for full native OS X support <http://
ranger.users.finkproject.org/kde/index.php/Home> that could change
but till it does KDE on mac is still tricky. I don't think you can
afford to have an unstable mailer ;)
