They are not competing against nature. They are competing mostly against
Joomla and Wordpress. These 3 platforms are the current top 3 in the CMS
world.
Joomla has severe limitations, mainly the inability to create dynamic content
types that are extendable. Drupal is absolutely superior in this area.
Wordpress has the biggest advantage that it is offered as a hosted solution on
wordpress.com. There are about 4 times more wordpress.com installations than
self-installed wordpress installs.
There are now several hosted Drupal solutions coming up as well. Most notably
(besides www.easysites.ug) www.drupalgardens.com Its still free to try out.

As in what Drupal can do for Africa, we did discuss at the conference. We'll
be launching a site to target the african Drupal community, do more evangelism
and try to create more success stories.
Please note the use of the word we in the above paragraph. The community is
not them, like those ones, the Drupal ones over there. The Drupal community is
anyone who does something for Drupal. You and me, for example.

Well, as a little bit of research shows, that statement is actually not
entirely true.

last count, july 2010, drupal had 5800 modules (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drupal ) and Joomla claims they have 5560

The current competition would be Wordpress, which is more easy to use than
Drupal. Hopefully the new Drupal 7 release, which is focussing on usability
and drupalgardens will allow Drupal to compete in this field too.

Very true, indeed.
(though a sharepoint site, IMHO will always make you look very stupid, no
matter how sexy it looks like)
