about two years ago,
webometrics, ranked Makerere University (MUK) poorly,
the media (New Vision, Monitor) was awash with stories how the Harvard of
Africa had sunk to a new low.

why did webometrics, rank poorly. They analyzed their web traffic, rich
files,and other factors (web related).
The top MUK administrators tried to put a defence, saying web is not a
good indicator.

What the public did not know, the top administration, put in place a team,
to ensure that the webometrics ranking improve. These efforts paid off, and
the last ranking showed MUK had improved significantly, and they did
everything to let every one know (short of putting up 4 page full color
adverts).

Is the webometrics methodlogy fool proof, of course not. Its just an
indicator. I analyzed the webometrics methodology and found some flaws. The
details are not important for this thread. What i can point out, Mogadishu
University (in Somalia) was ranked higher than Makerere at that time (major
flaw).

Lesson: Ignore web statistics at your own peril, (Ignoring them can be
harmful to your health)
