of-course the number of domains registered being few is caused by the high
prices ...cut the prices down, enable the registrars to compete with CFI
and you see domains growing fast ...

Noah,
I think Steen's reasoning is based on the fact that the direction in
which
uganda should head is like every body else and offcourse high prices
cannot
be justified anymore, however seeing that CFI put there time and money
into
managing this infrastructure it should simply not be snatched away just
because the GOU now see it as something valuable, dialogue and proper
planning should be done.
The issue here is that the GOU at times makes the strangest decisions
which
are not well justified , a good example is the current ICT minister who
just
sworn in, a man who am sure has no idea of what has been going on
technologically in uganda since the internet boom in uganda, so the
issue we
should be fighting here is not only the fact that the GOU needs to align
itself to international and recognizable standards but to also have a
form
of leadership which is based on what the country really needs not for
anyones personal profit because thats all its all about and with this
going
on , we can have this discussion for the next decade, when your kids
grow,
till when we grow old and die and we can remember we had it but in
the corridors of power the only thing that makes sense to them its
profit.
How we change this mindset is the hardest part and we can only do it
united
and actually have some knowledgable people in the right places who will
not
simply take all the work done for granted and for profit.

Hi
In Denmark the .DK domain is administered by "DK Hostmaster", a "not for
profit" company!
A .DK domain cost approx. USD 9 pr. year!
You can read more here https://www.dk-hostmaster.dk/english
If it is possible in other parts of the world - why not Uganda!!
Economies of scale. In the early 2000-2002 years when I was actively
involved in .ug domain registration, we got only a handful of requests
per
year. Because of this, the cost per domain was very high because the
costs
of running the registry were spread over a very small number. At that
time
the average ISP had a 128kbps or 256kbps link which it then gave dialup
access to its customers as primary business with a few wireless
customers.
In fact we would flock to any ISP that had anything like a 512kbps link.
As the number of internet users grew, the costs of registering a .ug
domain
have been going lower and lower almost every year because larger
numbers of
people registering .ug domains means that the cost can be spread over
more
people and thus cost per domain drops considerably. The same is
reflected in
costs of internet access.
You can't compare the economies of Denmark and Uganda, neither can you
realistically compare the number of internet users in Denmark as
compared to
Uganda. At the moment, even just our neighbour Kenya is so far ahead of
us
economically with GDP at $66bn as compared to Uganda's measly $42
billion.
How do you then compare us to Denmark whose GDP at $201bn is 5 times
that
of Uganda?
Noah.
