Well firstly shoving things down peoples throats is bad marketing, I never claimed he did that.
If you are saying he wasn't a marketing genius, then what are you saying about him? He never claimed to be any good at the technology side of the business. Let me explain. Taking a UK retailer at more or less random (www.argos.co.uk) they are today retailing a sony walkman 8GB mp3 player at GBP79.99 and they are selling an ipod nano 8GB mp3 player at GBP131.99. That is a mark-up of 65% on the Sony. Now they both have the same storage (8 gigabytes), they both play mp3 files decoded in an identical way, so the quality of sound will be the same, and it will just depend on the headphones. I defy anyone to tell them apart on the sound quality. Functionally they are more or less the same. So they have the same storage capacity the same quality output, and they do the same things. Which sells the more? You don't need me to tell you that the ipod outsells the walkman by a large factor. So Steve Jobs' genius is that he made many many millions of people pay 65% more for a device made in a Chinese sweatshop instead of buying its equivalent made in a Japanese factory famed for its quality engineering. Now are you seriously telling me that you don't consider the guy a marketing genius? What he did, and I've heard it said on this list many times, is that he made the people who bought his devices feel that they were super cool. He made them feel that when they went out with a device that had the apple logo on that they were cooler, and sexier than the person without those devices. How many of us here who run a business wish we had that talent?
