That something i've seen, even between different word versions. Like opening 
with a german word a one line document saved with polish word => windows 
freeze. 

There is something called "Open Document Format" standartised and supported by 
word AFAIK full. From the history of word it is obvious that Microsoft has no 
sentiments toward own formats and change/abandom them as the marketing 
departement recommends it. DOCX is AFAIK one of those temporary file formats 
that by historical experience can become unsupported with any change of a 
word version.

I believe LaTeX ;-)

but beside of that it is a question of what is needed in the daily routine.
