my personal opinion is that one of the fascinating things in "lute
world" is that there are still many different ideas of how the
instrument shoul dsound and be played. Lutz Kirchhoff plays completely
different to Hoppy or Junghnel and so on. And I like the idea that I
can listen to 7 different recordings of the same piece without getting
bored because sound and interpretation is different each time (okay -
there are also reasons caused by the production which produce
differences).
Sigrun (and as far as I know Konrad J., too) usually is rather strict
and I don't think she accepts the "thumb out" playing of for example
Lutz.
I find it enriching to have such a variety.

Good point, yes!
But I can tell it also works for small instruments.
I really think you're right in so far as the technical "development"
came for KJ from the baroque lute while Hoppy developed rather from the
renaissance instruments - I think he explains his technical ideas as
coming from "plectrum technique" ...

Rumor corner:
Actually Konrad seems to have recently bought a "Liuto Forte" which
shocked me. One of the best players we have seems to have decided to
leave the early music world - I hope this rumor is untrue otherwise I
would be *very* dissappointed. How can a honest musician follow an idea
orientated on the ideal of the Wandervgel?
