Dear James, in my experience it is (or should be) possible for a trained baritone or even a bass to give his voice a lighter tenor like sound and sing most of the songs with a G lute, an octave down of course, as a tenor would do. If you tune in a=415 hz it works all the more fine. But perhaps you have to do a bit of work to persuade the singer to throw his opera training over board :-) However, I think a song like "In darkness let me dwell" sounds good even with a darker coloured voice.
