I'm sure there will be a singer on this list who will correct me, but to me
the voice should match the instrument (as the voice is the more versatile -
except those if the narrow range that is all I have left). If one is not
singing to the concert hall with bel canto then one's range should be easily
two octaves with a similar timbre (when young), and can easily be three.
Except for the very few with perfect pitch singers work on relative pitch,
and have a preferred range that should be reasonably wide (at least a third
for a song). It is only in part music where dropping the tenor will take the
bass below his range, or vice versa by raising, that there is a problem.
