Thank you ALL for your thoughtful and erudite responses! I hope you
   will keep folowing this thread.

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of sheer knowledge and
intellect encapsulated within the lute list.

You have given me much more to ponder than I ever imagined possible.
(BTW, "Paint It Black" is one of my favorite Stones songs...)

     Back to my original premise:

(Feel free to tear this apart - I'm all ears... : )

Following the musical metaphor line of thought, here's one very
   far-fetched interpretation of Dowland's

   "In Darkness Let Me Dwell":

   In Darkness let me dwell:

In melancholy music let me have my reverie...

   The ground shall sorrow be:

The foundation of the music - the chord structure / the figured bass -
   shall evoke sorrow

The roof despair, to bar all

   cheerful light from me:

The high notes shall evoke despair

(no happy sounds in this piece)

The walls of marble black that

   Moistened, still shall weep:

The body of the music shall evoke tears

   (the whole piece exudes sadness)

   My music hellish, jarring sounds

   To banish friendly sleep:

I'm never satisfied with my own playing,

but I am so driven I keep on,

   fraught with insomnia

   Thus wedded to my woes,

   And bedded to my tomb:

My emotions are welded to the music

   They are one...

   O, let me living die...

Let me achieve ecstasy through immersing myself in this melancholy
   music.

   Such a catharsis...
