Why don't you find some distribution that is going to stick with an older init
system and contribute some code to it?

To make this clearer, if you aren't going to contribute then your comments on
mailing lists aren't of any use to anyone. Lots of people want to tell others
how to do things, but if they don't have the money to pay someone or the skill
to do some work then it doesn't matter.
