Hi,

XFCE is much older than Lxde is, therefore it benefits from many more hours of
work on
it than Lxde does.

I started using my own computer in 2004 (it's not that old) and XFCE
already existed. It was version 1 or so. It had just a small naked panel, which
could be
moved by drag-drop and even be hidden out of the screen, and nothing much more.
That was
very light, and had almost no feature.

XFCE 4 today is a rich environment, which is frankly more greedy on the
resource of a
machine than Lxde is. (but much less than Gnome, Gnome-shell, Unity, or Kde4 of
course).

When I install or upgrade a Linux box to someone else's machine, I'll install
Xubuntu if the machine has 1 GB ram minimum.
On the page where Xubuntu is presented, it is said to need 512 MB RAM minimum,
but I
think it is not comfortable for current use, because I have tried.

Instead, if a machine has 512 MB ram only I'll go for Lubuntu, then I know it
will be
comfortable enough.

For myself, any machine, low with resources or high I use a set of programs
around
Openbox and no desktop manager at all. I did also put this setup to some
people's
machines when the resources are really very low, or are average, depending to
some
criteria. Then sometimes they get tint2 as a panel, sometimes they get lxpanel
(then I
add a program for the logout button, to avoid installing lxsession just to get
the logout
buttons).

Best,
Mélodie
