I really second this initiative. I would like to see a gtk/gnome
version of LyX: gLyX, in contrast to kLyX distributed with kde. Since
many Linux distributions already supply the latest teTeX the back-end
is already there.

I'm using LyX in Solaris 2.5 (sun) and Linux RHL-5.9(i386). In both
environments the WM is WindowMaker. Additionally on the Linux boxes
I'm using gnome and is considering a compile of the gnome distribution
for Solaris.

Getting away from xforms enables a distribution of LyX for many
vendors such as Redhat and Debian since the source code will be
available together with the GPL license. Also, a wider use is
automatic since the LyX distributions will move away from the contrib
areas.
