These kinds of arguements are what caused us to start the gui independence
work in the first place but with the extra reasoning that it would get LyX
onto a variety of other platforms as well, even non-free ones, without
further forking the code base.
That said, we've had at least 5 offers to do a Gtk port once the
gui-independence work has finished. At the moment we have still got about
10 major dialog boxes left to try to extracate from the main codebase and
make gui-independent. There is still some work left to be done on making
other areas gui-independent as well. So if you'd like to help out I
suggest you read the gui-independence documentation (either from the
developers web site or in the development/Code_Rules/ directory of the cvs
repository (see the developers web site for instructions for cvs).
Then have a read through the Popups.h and Popup.C files in the source and
then if you're still interested please contact the developers list again,
especially if you questions or better ideas for doing stuff.
